Our geographical specificity places us among the most prominent areas affected by climate change, which requires further studies

The National Center of Meteorology, represented by the Regional Center for Climate Change, held a scientific workshop to study the heavy rainfall that affected the Kingdom and the Gulf countries during the period (15-17) last April, with the participation of a group of specialists and researchers in the field of meteorology and climate.

The workshop dealt with the ongoing analyses and studies on the past rainy situation and the results that emerged in this regard, to come up with recommendations that contribute to the development of meteorological concepts to provide accurate information and deal optimally with the consequences of climate change.

For his part, the Executive Director of the Regional Center for Climate Change, Dr. Mazen Asiri, explained that the planet has been witnessing climate changes for many decades as a result of the rise in the planet's temperatures, due to the cosmic and climatic nature of the planet, as well as human intervention through the emissions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and the elimination of the environmental balance, which is the main factor in the consumption of such gases.

He pointed out that climate change means not only the rise in the planet's temperatures above its natural rates, but also the climatic and environmental consequences that the planet is witnessing, which plays a key role in changes in the climatic patterns of atmospheric movement, atmospheric phenomena, water body temperatures and other climatic components. These effects are not specific to a specific region of the globe, but are comprehensive in different intensity and type of impact. The Arabian Gulf region is one of those regions affected by these changes.

He added: "The peculiarity of our geographical region, as it is located in the supraorbital belt and surrounded by three bodies of water, the Arabian Gulf, the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea, and the topographical diversity, places our region among the most prominent regions affected by climate change as well as affecting the global climate." From this point of view, our region has been witnessing in recent decades many severe and extreme weather phenomena, such as the continued rise in temperatures and the occurrence of very heavy rainy conditions, which necessitates conducting extensive studies to understand the nature of these changes in the nature of weather phenomena that our region is witnessing, in order to have the clear benefit of conducting such studies on the development of meteorological concepts, which in turn benefit many fields such as weather and climate forecasting, crisis and disaster management, adaptation and resilience plans, and others.

The Executive Director of the Regional Center for Climate Change pointed out that our region has recently witnessed a very heavy rainfall situation, classified as an extreme state on April 16 and 17 of this year 2024 AD, as it was widespread that affected the Kingdom and the Arab Gulf countries with very heavy rainfall amounts that exceeded the normal rates, the most prominent of which was announced by the United Arab Emirates by recording more than 250 milliliters, and therefore it was necessary to study and analyze this situation to identify the dynamic and climatic factors which contributed to the formation of this situation.
