Overview of the National Center for Meteorology

The National Center for Meteorology was established pursuant to Council of Ministers Resolution No. (417) dated 19 Rajab 1440 AH as an independent entity dedicated to providing high-quality weather and climate services to protect lives and property and support sustainable development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Center operates through an integrated technological and operational framework aligned with international standards to monitor atmospheric phenomena and issue accurate forecasts. It also seeks to optimize the use of the Kingdom’s natural resources while ensuring their responsible management to meet current needs and safeguard future generations. The establishment of the Center aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to the meteorology sector as a vital contributor to societal stability and well-being. The Center continues to enhance its services and capabilities and build effective partnerships with the private sector, national and international research institutions, and civil society organizations.

The meteorology sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia receives significant attention due to its pivotal role in supporting public safety, protecting lives and property, and contributing to sustainable development. In recognition of this importance, the National Center for Meteorology was established as an independent national entity tasked with advancing weather and climate services in accordance with international best practices. At the National Center for Meteorology, we operate with a clear vision focused on improving forecast accuracy, developing technical and technological capabilities, and enhancing the efficiency of our services to meet the needs of beneficiaries and support key development sectors across the Kingdom.

We believe that achieving leadership in this field requires investment in national talent and the expansion of effective partnerships with relevant stakeholders, the private sector, and national and international research institutions. Historical Journey of the National Center for Meteorology

1930

Establishment of the Military Affairs Directorate, which was also responsible for meteorological affairs in the Kingdom.

1940

The Military Affairs Directorate was replaced by the “Chief of Staff Branch” under the Ministry of War, which included the “Air Force Administration.”

1950

The name of the Air Force Administration was changed to the “General Directorate of Meteorology,” due to its connection with civil aviation services.

1966

Meteorological affairs became an independent entity under the name “General Directorate of Meteorology.”

1981

The institution’s name was amended to “Meteorology and Environmental Protection.”

2001

The name was changed to the “Presidency of Meteorology and Environmental Protection.”

2016

The name was changed to the “General Authority of Meteorology and Environmental Protection.”

2019

Establishment of the “National Center for Meteorology” and separation of the General Authority for Meteorology and Environmental Protection.

2023

Establishment of regional programs and centers:
  • Regional Climate Change Center
  • Regional Dust and Sandstorm Program and Center

2024

The Kingdom represented at COP16 and was selected to chair the International Conference on Combating Desertification, with the launch of advanced monitoring systems for climatic phenomena.

2025

Continuing excellence in developing meteorological and early warning services, strengthening technical infrastructure and partnerships, expanding international cooperation, and institutional empowerment and governance to support sustainability.
