Regional Workshop on Capacity Building in the Analysis and Modeling of Sand and Dust Storms,
Organized by the Regional Center for Dust and Sand Storms of the National Center
Meteorology, in cooperation with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the University of
Arab States and the Barcelona Dust Storm Center, with the participation of experts and representatives from countries
Arab and West Asian Countries.
The two-day workshop aims to strengthen technical capabilities
and humanities in the fields of monitoring, analysis and modeling, and supporting national and regional efforts
to develop forecasting and early warning systems, which contributes to reducing the effects of dust storms
And sand on the environment, public health and the economy.
In his speech during the opening, the Executive Director of the Regional Storm Center
Dust and sand Mr. Jumaan bin Saad Al-Qahtani that dust storms are no longer just
Transient weather phenomena, but it has become an intertwined environmental, economic and health issue that represents one of the most prominent challenges

Al-Qahtani explained that dealing with this phenomenon requires scientific cooperation and planning
stressed the importance of strengthening national and regional capacities in the fields of monitoring
and analysis and modelling as a key step towards the development of predictive and early warning systems and the reduction of
risks, which contribute to protecting lives, reducing losses and improving community response.
He pointed out that this workshop comes as an extension of the efforts of the Regional Center in transferring
Knowledge, exchange of experiences, and building technical and human capacities in cooperation with partners
regional and international organizations, stressing that it embodies the spirit of teamwork and regional integration in the
Addressing common environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development.
The efforts of the Regional Storm Center were praised by the participating international organizations
Dust and Sands in organizing this workshop, stressing that such initiatives enhance capabilities
in monitoring, analyzing, modeling and uniting the joint efforts of West Asian and Arab countries
In the face of dust phenomena and their climatic and economic effects.
The workshop includes a number of scientific and training sessions on the use of
Remote sensing in dust storm tracking and atmospheric data analysis and models
numerical, in addition to discussing the relationship between dust storms and climate change, and reviewing
Successful Regional Experiences in the Development of Early Warning Systems.
The organization of this workshop comes within the framework of the efforts of the National Center of Meteorology, represented by the
