The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the National Center of Meteorology, chaired the meetings of the fifty-first session of the Committee on Tropical Cyclones of the World Meteorological Organization (PTC-51) virtually, with the participation of Member States and relevant international organizations.
In his opening remarks, the CEO of the National Center of Meteorology, Dr. Ayman bin Salem Ghulam, welcomed the participants in the course, expressing his thanks to the member states and participating organizations for their continuous efforts in promoting joint action to confront tropical cyclones and severe weather conditions.
Dr. Ghulam explained that this session is an opportunity to discuss technical and scientific reports that reflect the Committee's efforts in enhancing the readiness of member states to deal with the risks resulting from tropical cyclones, and to reduce their effects on communities and infrastructure.
Dr. Ghulam pointed out that the increase in the number of tropical cyclones and severe weather conditions in recent years calls for strengthening regional coordination and raising the level of preparedness in order to contribute to confronting the effects of climate change and mitigating its effects on communities in the region.
The agenda of the current session included a number of key themes, including a review of performance reports, lessons learned and future plans, as well as a discussion of ways to enhance cooperation among Member States to develop effective and sustainable tropical cyclone response strategies.
